As most families will know, finding a spooktacular celebration that suits all can be bit of a fright, so picking the right event that doesn’t feel hellish during half term makes all the difference- and even better if you can use a discount!

We’ve got our own sliding scale of spooky events you should attend this October Half Term, as rated from a sliding scale of least scary to the scariest of them all!

Pumpkin Festival at Cannon Hall Farm

Dates: Sat 22-  Mon 31 October 2016

Cost: £8.95 per adult, £8.95 per child (includes a pumpkin), £8.50 per senior citizen, £34 for a family ticket (includes 2 pumpkins, any combination of 4 people) and Under 2’s are free.

Scare factor: Not even spooky enough to make us sweat!


Halloween afternoon tea at Tropical Butterfly House

Dates: 1- 31  October

Cost: £34  FOR TWO including admission to the Wildlife Centre. Valid Monday – Friday or £38 at weekends, £20 for annual pass holders.

Scare factor: A tempting cauldron of tasty treats… 


Spooktacular shock-olate at York’s Chocolate story

Dates: 22- 30 October 2016

Cost: £6 per child

Scare factor: Spinning the ‘wheel of fortune’ and decide your fate-receive either a deliciously tasty treat or a revolting rotten trick chocolate


Wizard workshops and creepy creatures at Stockeld Park

Dates: 24- 30 October 2016

Cost: £6 per child

Scare factor: Cast your wizarding powers and learn new magic spells whilst  have fun watching tricks.. magical yet not scary!


Minecraft comes to life at National Coal Mining Museum for England

Dates: 22- 23 October 2016

Cost: £5.50 per child

Scare factor: Swap scariness for science and  See sessions involving minerals from the game, an insight into Fossils as well as crafts based on the game.


Ghostly goings on at Eureka!

Dates: 22- 31 October

Costs: FREE ( with annual pass holders), included in standard admission.

Scare factor: Ghoulish ghost catchings around the museum with the ghosbuster team,  and even get your grisly groove on with some truly terrifying dancing…

Halloween Spooktacular at Tropical Butterfly house

Dates:October weekends & 22 – 31 October, 10am – 5.00pm

Costs: FREE (included in standard admission)

Scare factor: Visit the new Witch’s Cottage and the Haunted House and dare you brave the ghoulish tractor trailer ride through the Freaky Forest and come face to face with ghosts and monsters…?

Dates: 22- 30 October

Costs: FREE ( with annual pass holders), included in standard admission.

Scare factor: Bewitch, betwixt, bedazzle… in your finest witching and wizardy finery! Little witches and wizards can ride the spooky indoor train ride at Mischief Mansion and pick up a free Halloween Zoo Trail sheet. See event for more details…


Monsters of the Sea at The Deep

Dates: 22- 30 October

Costs: FREE  included in standard admission.

Scare factor: Unearth the monsters from below the waters… bring your own watery beast to life in one of our sea monster craft sessions; create the wildest, scariest creature you think of!  Or why not turn yourself into a magical sea creature with face painting?


Knightmares at Royal Armouries

Dates: 22-30 October


Scare factor: Tales of some of the most unusual and gruesome royal deaths throughout history. Activities will include storytelling, combat demonstrations, dramatic performances, crafts, Hands on History sessions and animation workshops.

Do you dare to scare? Only the brave shall pass…


Frightwater Valley at Lightwater Valley

Dates: We invited  lifestyle and family blogger, Esther from Inside Out About, to visit Stockeld Park with her family for a magical introduction to the Christmas experience….

Costs: FREE (included in admission)

Scare factor: The darker the night, the scarier the fright!!  Get lost in our longest and most terrifying live scare maze yet is definitely not for the faint- hearted!

Fright night at Stockeld Park

Dates: 29 – 31 October

ONLINE BOOKING ONLY: time slots available from 5.30pm – 9.30pm

Costs: £14  pp 

Scare factor: The finale is ONLY FOR THE BRAVE!! .. Are you strong enough to enter the Black Crypt? Blind faith will be your guide as you embark on a journey into the inky darkness, in this sensory deprived experience. Sometimes it’s what you can’t see that gets you!
