Autumn is a really vibrant and colourful time at Harewood, not least for the changing leaves across 120 acres.

The season starts with outdoor events in early September, followed by a Makers’ Market and live music on 21 and 22 September, a residency from the Tashi Lhunpo monks who share insights into their culture and then a series of workshops and events, including floristry with talented local florists Leafy Couture, Twilight Tours of the House after-hours and autumn walks with the Head Gardener.

They’re also launching a new Royal Afternoon Tea.

Highlights from a Royal archive

28 September – 3 November 2019

Harewood House was home to Princess Mary from 1930 to 1965, following her marriage into the Lascelles family in 1922.

Today, Harewood House Trust cares for her archive and collection – which includes a lifetime’s worth of letters and diaries as well as personal belongings, that not only offer a unique insight into her role as a Princess, but also her relationships with close family members. She was the beloved only daughter of King George V and Queen Mary; an adored sister to two further monarchs, Edward VIII and George VI, as well as three other brothers; and a cherished wife and mother to Henry Lascelles, 6th Earl of Harewood and their two sons, George and Gerald.

A selection of material from Princess Mary’s private archive will be displayed around the House alongside a number of her possessions, illustrating each of these roles and relationships in turn. Highlights include intimate correspondence between Princess Mary and family members following her engagement in 1922, and a display of the newly conserved wedding train, embroidered with emblematic flowers of the British Empire, alongside her bridal slippers and a floral headdress.
